Drinks made from "orchid flour" Salep or sahlab was a popular drink in Persia, India, Turkey, Graetz. In Europe, the drink was popular even before the advent of coffee and tea and continued to be offered in English cafes. In England during the 18th and 19th centuries it was known as a saloop. In Turkey, 30 tons of tubers of 38 species are harvested annually. The Turkish region of Kahramanmaras is the existing Salepa. That region is also known as Salepi Marash. To produce one kilogram of peanut flour, 1000 to 4000 tubers are required.
